Beavers fencing activity

Beavers at Whalley Range are young people aged 6 to 8. We have two Beavers sections, which meet on Wednesday and Thursday evenings during school term time.

What do we do?

A beaver group is known as a Colony and ours focuses on having fun, learning new skills, making new friends, helping others, learning about the world around them and going on adventures.

Our group is lucky as we have so much safe outside space and whenever we can we get outside! Whether that’s to play games, go on treasure hunts or just to run around like crazy! Beavers isn’t like school, we learn by doing, no worksheets or books, it’s all games and experiences. We also have many adventures in our local area, visiting different locations such as Campsites, activity centres and parks. We also enjoy Beaver sleepovers where you will get your first camping experience.

Beavers work together in teams to help each other out and encouraging everyone to achieve. Our Beaver Leader is there with the other adult volunteers to share their skills, run the activities and keep everyone safe. Our leaders are named after animals so come and meet them!

Beaver Badges

Beavers can gain badges through completing different activities. Activity badges range from Photography, Cooking, Creative, Space, hiking, Hobbies and global issues. There is also some more challenging badges known as the Challenge Awards focusing upon the Personal challenges, Outdoor Challenges and teamwork challenges. If you achieve all the Challenge badges and some activity badges you will get our highest award in beavers known as the Chief Scouts Bronze award.

We understand that you might be a little anxious in sending your young person to Beavers. All are adults are DBS checked and trained to support the group. We also have a number of young leaders (older scouts) who are helping, sharing their scouting skills and learning themselves what it’s like to be a leader. Some of these young leaders are also working towards their volunteering section of their Duke of Edinburgh. We will ask you to help from time to time on a Parent rota to help support our leaders. We may also ask for parents to share some of their skills with the group. Of course, you can always join us as adult volunteers (link to page).

Promise and Investiture

As a beaver they will make a promise, which they will try and follow each day. The beaver will make their promise after a few weeks of starting Beavers, once they are settled in. You are always welcome to stay for the first night to see how your child gets on and you’ll be invited to see them make their promise and be invested into Beavers at Whalley Range Scouts.

When you have gained your Chief Scout Bronze award and reach 8 years old it’s time to move on to continue their scouting adventure in Cubs at Whalley Range Scouts.

Put your phone down and what are you left with? Just teamwork, courage and the skills to succeed.’
