Cub Scouts Activity

Cubs at Whalley Range Scouts are young people aged 8 to 10 ½. We have two Cub Scouts sections, which meet weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays during school term time.

A Cub group is known as a Pack and ours like the Beavers focuses on having fun, learning new skills, making new friends, helping others, learning about the world around them and going on adventures.

What do we do?

As Cubs we learn by doing. We carry on what you may have done in Beavers and go one step further! We play larger games, go further away from the hut, climb bigger towers, walk higher mountains while still have fun. If your child didn’t go to Beavers it doesn’t matter, they will still be able to enjoy. Our space at our hut means we have place of chance to get outside and explore, but we are not limited to just our hut.

We regularly go on tips to local activities such as swimming, fire stations, places of worship and meeting with other cub packs in the area. Every year we always head away for at least a weekend camping under canvas at one of our many scout campsites in the area. The weekend is full of activities and adventures while also understanding how to look after themselves when they are not at home.

Badges and Awards</h4

Once we’ve had our adventures we soon realise that we have achieved some badges. Cubs have a range of badges to have a go at. What makes it different from school is that there are no books or worksheets around, we learn by doing. The activity badges gives the cubs a chance to become an expert in something they love or try something shiny and new. Activity badges range from athletics, astronomy, home safety, environmental issues and pioneering, there’s something for everyone. We complete a number of activity badges at Cubs, but you can always complete them at home and let us know. There is also challenge badges, which take a little more work, but are really rewarding. If you manage all of these, you will achieve the top award in Cubs the Chief Scout Sliver Award!

Tuesday and Thursday Nights

Our two Cub Scouts sections meet on Tuesday and Thursday nights during term time.

Whalley Range Cub Scouts is made up of young people aged 8 to 10 ½ , from around the local area and is run by an adult Cub leader traditionally named after a character from The Jungle Book. We also have other adult leaders, (who are also named from the jungle book) who are on hand to supervise activities, share their skills and keep everyone safe. We also have some Young leaders who are Explorer Scouts, aged 14 to 18 help out, too as part of the Explorer Scout Young Leader programme.

When you join Whalley Range Scouts your cub will become part of a Six. A Six is a smaller group of Cubs, headed up by a Sixer and a Seconder. Sixers and Seconders are Cub Scouts who are chosen to take on leadership responsibilities, such as welcoming new people to the Pack, being extra helpful on camp, or taking charge of a particular game or activity. After a few weeks of joining your young person will make their promise and be invested into Whalley Range Scouts and receive their necker and group badges.

Teamwork is at the heart of what we do and we complete activities together and help each other out when we can. Your young person will have no problems joining in, but if you want to you can stay the first few nights to make sure they are happy. When they reach their chief scout silver award and the age of 10½ your Cub moves onto our Scout section (link to scout page).
